ZeoFeed® is a natural feed additive derived from zeolite – clinoptilolite, registered as a technological additive in the European Union (Reg. 651/2013 – functional groups: binders & anti-caking agents, ID 1g568). ZeoFeed® helps to keep animal feed dry and free-flowing (reducing clumping and moisture), acts as a binder and, due to its ion-exchange capacity, helps to reduce ammonia and bind undesirable substances, e.g. heavy metals, bioamines and polar mycotoxin molecules. In this way, it supports maximum feed utilisation and improves housing conditions.

Composition and mode of action

ZeoFeed is essentially a natural zeolite – clinoptilolite, a crystalline clay-silicate mineral of sedimentary origin. Its internal structure consists of numerous channels, pores and cavities. These pores are responsible for its cation exchange capacity (CEC). The surface of zeolite is negatively charged and thus forms bonds with positively charged specific elements or molecules.

Direct incorporation into feed

ZeoFeed® can be incorporated directly into complete feed mixtures for all animal species at a maximum dose of 10,000 mg/kg (1%) of complete feed or, for individual species:

• pigs 6–10 g/kg of feed (0.6–1%)
• poultry 7 g/kg of feed (0.7%)
• cattle: 150 g per animal per day

ZeoFeed® can be added as a supplement to the complete feed formulation or used to replace a component of the complete feed formulation (e.g. wheat, wheat bran / wheat flour, rice bran) at a suitable dosage of up to 1% maximum.

Production of premixes

ZeoFeed® – a feed additive used as a binding agent – is suitable for use as a carrier (base ingredient) in the production of premixes. Thanks to the properties of zeolite (ion exchange, reversible hydration and dehydration), the final zeolite-based premix acquires certain additional beneficial properties once incorporated into the animal feed (binding of free water and ammonia).

Applying experience with clinoptilolite in animal nutrition

Based on more than 20 years’ experience, supported by dozens of scientific articles and industry studies on the use of clinoptilolite in animal feed, zeolite is also regarded as an additive that contributes

• to increasing the efficiency of animal feed
• to the efficient use of energy from animal feed
• to improving the energy conversion of animal feed
• to reducing ammonia concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract
• as a factor resulting in drier, less odourous manure with a higher nitrogen content.

Which factors?

• improved production performance, weight gain and feed energy conversion
• increased digestibility of nutrients when less calorific value passes through the gut without being absorbed
• slower passage of feed through the gastrointestinal tract and increased microbial activity in the small intestine
• improved buffering action that stabilises the pH of the digestive tract
• a significant reduction in ammonia concentration in the animals’ digestive system, and the sequestration of most heavy metal ions, bioamines, polar mycotoxins and certain harmful metabolites
• improved animal welfare in the barn, as the reduction in humidity and free ammonia helps to reduce disease and the presence of flies and parasites

The European Union, in accordance with Directive 70/524/EEC (Commission Regulation (EC) No 1810/2005), has officially authorised the use of sedimentary-origin clinoptilolite as a binding and anti-caking additive in feed for poultry, cattle, pigs and salmon.
